Saint Bernard Catholic School is
one of twenty-seven elementary schools in the Diocese of
Evansville. The present enrollment is 132 students
kindergarten through eighth grade. The staff consist of 9
full-time teachers, 3 part time teachers, and a full-time
principal. The staff also includes a part-time speech and
hearing specialist, a part-time/on call nurse, a Title I
instructor, all employed by the South Spencer County
School Corporation.
Saint Bernard Catholic
School first opened its doors in 1877, as a boarding
school operated by the Sisters of St. Benedict from
Ferdinand, Indiana. It was a one room school with
emphasis on English and German. Also offered were
instruction in needle work and music.
The
majority of the current facility was constructed in 1960,
with an addition in 1985, which houses areas for science,
home economics, art, and the administrative offices. The
office area includes the secretarys office, the
nurses office, and the principals office.
The school
has added a two-room portable classroom to take care of
the increase enrollment that has taken place over the
last years.
